Clocking a speeding driver on Dunedin’s Southern Motorway from the Fairfield Bridge yesterday is Constable Richard Kupenga.

Senior Sergeant Nik Leigh said officers monitored speeds for two hours and issued 15 infringement notices for speeding. One vehicle was travelling 23kmh over the limit.

Roads had been icy lately and there were crashes yesterday morning, he said. People could expect to see more operations across the city and anyone stopped could expect to be breath-tested.

Even good drivers needed to be careful, he said.

‘‘People don’t get up in the morning and expect to be involved in the next fatality, but it can happen and it does.’’

More people would be driving as the weather got colder, leading to busier roads. It was important to allocate extra time in the morning to defrost windscreens and drive slower, he said.
