School van crashes after swerving for dog

The driver of a van belonging to a Dunedin secondary school escaped serious injuries when he crashed through a fence and rolled on to a bank after swerving to avoid a dog.

The King’s High School van crashed in Stone St, near the intersection with Kaikorai Valley Rd, about 11.20am yesterday.

It landed on its side on the bank of a property which houses an Aurora substation and firefighters used a steel cable to secure the van while they got the driver out and to a waiting ambulance.

Senior Station Officer Justin Wafer, of Dunedin City, said the driver appeared to be travelling down Stone St when the crash happened.

A St John spokesman said one person was taken to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

King’s High School deputy rector Darin Smith said the driver was a staff member and had some minor cuts and abrasions. No passengers were in the van at the time.

"Witness reports have ascertained that a dog has run out on to the road in front of the school van and the driver has swerved to avoid the dog.

"Police have referred to the accident as a freak accident and in no way was the driver at fault," he said.
