Radiation technologists take action again

Medical radiation technologists (MRTs) at Dunedin Hospital and Invercargill's Southland Hospital are again taking industrial action over the long-running pay dispute with District Health Boards New Zealand (DHBNZ).

From August 2 to 5, MRTs would provide life-preserving cover only between 5pm and 8am in higher-end scans such as MRI and CT, Dunedin Hospital union delegate Debbie Cragg said.

X-ray services would continue as normal.

On August 6, MRTs would take industrial action until 8am on Monday, August 9, providing life-preserving cover in higher-end scans, but normal service in X-rays.

Union delegate Bernadette Gourley said industrial action started yesterday at Southland Hospital.

The MRTs were working to rule until August 6, and providing life-preserving cover between 9pm and 8am weekdays and 9pm to 9am at weekends.

Mrs Cragg said it was disappointing the MRTs did not seem to be "getting anywhere" with their negotiations.

MRTs' union, the Association of Professional and Executive Employees, has been in negotiation with DHBNZ since mid-2009.

The union is seeking a 3% pay rise.
