Otago Polytechnic School of Architecture, Building and Engineering head John Findlay's attitude to employing military reservists has won him the 2010 Otago Southland Regional Employer of the Year Award.
He is the employer of Otago Polytechnic electrical programmes lecturer and leader Barry Harwood, who is a leading weapons electrical fitter (LWEF) for HMNZS Toroa.
Mr Harwood nominated Mr Findlay for the award, which recognises employers who allow staff time off work to do volunteer reserve activities.
Mr Findlay was delighted with the award, which was presented by New Zealand Defence Force Regional Employer Support Council chairman Julian Smith aboard HMNZS Otago at Birch St wharf last night.
Mr Findlay was among about 25 employers nominated for the award.
While it was challenging to fill Mr Harwood's role at the polytechnic when he was away on reserve activities, Mr Findlay said he made the situation work because the polytechnic got "good returns" from him.
"He's a great leader and he's inspiring for both the students and other staff."
Mr Findlay will now go through to the national final of the Employer of the Year Award early next year.
