There is a hushed air when a large room of embroiderers gets down to business.

At the Otago Embroiderers' Guild May Day event the low levels of noise, however, masked plenty of work as guild members and interested members of the public worked on lavender humbugs, embroidered mini hoops and plenty of other projects.

President Mary Flaherty said embroidery was growing in popularity, in the same way knitting, for instance, had gone out of fashion and then made a comeback.

May Day, held at the Leith Bowling Club rooms, had attracted people from as far afield as Temuka, Te Anau and Invercargill to an event that allowed interested people to have a go at the craft.

The club had about 130 members, and had been going since 1961.
