Chris Ford launched an online campaign fighting the removal of his postbox on the corner of Frasers and Kaikorai Valley Rds.
He said removing a postbox during a local election campaign was tantamount to removing a ballot box.
The box was earmarked for removal on September 26.
Voting closes on October 8.
Regional service delivery manager Murray Rei said yesterday New Zealand Post had put off decisions on 12 Dunedin postboxes until October 10.
``Mr Ford contacted New Zealand Post ... and we have listened to his feedback on the local elections.
``Final decisions are due to be made soon on the following 12 boxes, but we will delay these decisions until the week commencing 10 October.
``With 122 post boxes in Dunedin, people won't have any trouble finding a box to post their ballot papers during the local elections,'' Mr Rei said.
Earlier, Mr Ford told the Otago Daily Times many local residents had mobility issues and could not easily get to the next postbox at Z petrol station in Kaikorai Valley Rd.
Mr Ford believed the state-owned enterprise needed to rethink its policy of removing postboxes, especially in low income areas.
If it was uneconomic to service postboxes, a system of posting letters from individual letterboxes could be introduced, Mr Ford suggested.
This worked well in the rural delivery network.
Earlier this year, New Zealand Post told the Otago Daily Times postboxes must receive about 30 letters per day Monday to Friday to be viable.
New Zealand Post has removed numerous boxes in Dunedin this year.
It proved responsive to community pressure in June when it took heed of a protest by residents at Abbeyfield, in Balmacewen Rd, and let their postbox stay.
However, the pleas of Halfway Bush residents fell on deaf ears despite Phyl Beagley (85) and Gaynor Earl (86) gathering more than 300 signatures on a petition to save the 465 Taieri Rd postbox. The postbox received 80 letters per week but was still removed.
