A Dunedin doctor sparked an emergency callout yesterday afternoon after his kayak drifted away, leaving him stuck on an island in Lake Dunstan.
Constable Doug Winter, of Cromwell, said the 61-year-old man paddled out to the island for a day of fishing near the wetlands area of the lake.
He tethered his kayak but the wind came up and it drifted away.
A resident heard the man's calls for help and a second person spotted the upturned kayak drifting down the lake, sparking two calls to emergency services about 5pm.
The man and his kayak were picked up by residents in boats.
The Clyde Coastguard was called but stood down. An ambulance was also called as a precaution but the man did not require medical treatment.
