Councils urged to collaborate on pest planning

Dunedin's two councils must work together to achieve the city's pest management goals.

That is the view of Dunedin city councillors who were discussing the Otago Regional Council's proposed regional pest management plan yesterday.

The councillors were discussing the city council's submission on the plan which recommends a few minor changes, including adding additional species to its pest list and making land occupiers rather than owners responsible for noxious weeds in certain circumstances.

The regional council often notified the city council of noxious weeds growing on road reserves which were fully occupied by the neighbouring private landowner, the submission said.

While such usage was unofficial, it was tolerated by the city council so weed control would be much more effective if it was the responsibility of the land occupier in those circumstances.

Cr David Benson-Pope said the plan was just one part of what was becoming a co-ordinated approach to managing the city's pest eradication programmes.

Think big Benson-Pope and introduce wheelie bins as part of the rates that will help a lot with pests by containing rubbish and putting all families on a level playing field because they will all have wheelie bins as part of the rates. which = less dumping which = less pests - its not rocket science, maybe some or all the councillors to the pest list

I agree, the council need to get rid of their single use plastic rubbish bags now!

Dunedin's two councils must work together to achieve the city's public transport too! The ORC have have somehow managed to destroy a perfectly working system and replaced it with an a non-working one.
