A drilling rig has been working at the car park this week.
Earlier this year Mondelez announced it planned to close its Dunedin factory after more than a century of chocolate making in the city.
The move will cost more than 300 workers their jobs by the time the plant closes early next year.
A Mondelez spokesman said yesterday the drilling rig was on the site conducting soil tests and geotechnical assessments which will form part of "standard documentation requirements associated with the eventual sale of the site".
The work was expected to be completed by the middle of next week.
Asked if the company had a particular use for the site, or purchaser in mind, the spokesman said it did not.
"We’re currently working with our real estate partner to establish a formal sale process, and we’re hopeful of finding a buyer that will use the site in a way that benefits the local economy and jobs market."
