Student volunteers Tom Hadley and Tessa Worthington unload an unwanted couch yesterday during the first of three Drop For Good events.

In a collaboration between the University of Otago’s sustainability office and the Otago University Student’s Association, students were able to drop off unwanted items at the University recycling centre before leaving the city for the summer. They could also have them collected.

Miss Worthington said she planned to drop off some items herself next week.

"I think it’s really cool to support the circular economy," she said.

Many items, especially clothes, were still usable even if no longer wanted, and the event was all about sustainability, she said.

Two more collection days would be held next Thursday and Friday, and items would be sold back to students at a low cost next year.
