A helicopter has recovered a body found at Boulder Beach on the Otago Peninsula.

Police were first called to the remote beach at 2pm today after a member of the public found the body.

Senior Sergeant Shona Low, of the Southern District Command Centre, said it was recovered about 6.30pm.

A helicopter was used because access to the site was difficult, Snr Sgt Low said.

Officers and search and rescue personnel were seen by the Otago Daily Times getting to the beach down a steep track using quad bikes and four-wheel-drive vehicles.

Police would not release any further information until the person had been formally identified.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said a post-mortem on the body would be done today.
