Are the pews now ordinary seating and how do arrivals genuflect without the prayer
kneel?

Do you mean how do they KNEEL without the help of an extra bit of wood for the knees to rest on during the Mass.. 'Genuflect' is a little like a bob-bend the knee as you come into the pew. Few do this now and those who do not want or cannot kneel thoughout the service do not have to. God is not expecting too much of us. Christ was human too and as a woodworker and a walker also had sore bones and muscles.
