A woman raising money for her cancer treatment has been given a ''bit of hope'' after a successful quiz night at the Mosgiel Returned and Services Association (RSA) last week.

Amanda McEwan, of Abbotsford, said she was ''hugely grateful'' after the event at the Mosgiel RSA last Tuesday raised $10,179 for targeted treatment for her head and neck cancer.

''It's put us on a bit of a high and given us a bit of hope,'' Mrs McEwan said.

The night went better than she expected and the money would add to the more than $23,000 already raised on the crowd sourcing web-page Givealittle.

''I didn't realise how huge a night it was going to be and how well supported [it would be].''

Mrs McEwan said with her cancer being terminal, the money raised would go towards extending the time she had to spend with family and friends.

The treatment was expensive and not funded by the Government.

She wanted to thank the RSA for hosting such a successful event and for all the volunteer hours they had put in.

Mrs McEwan was diagnosed with metastatic head and neck cancer last year and since then it had been found to have spread to her lungs and bones.

Mosgiel RSA general manager Paul Morriss said it was ''really nice'' to be involved in such a successful event.

The RSA held quiz nights most Tuesdays to raise money for different causes and also as a way of showing off its new facilities.
