Have workers, need jobs

The Otago University Students' Association is calling for businesses and the public to advertise jobs with Student Job Search (SJS) after a drop in the number of jobs available through the service.

Figures released by OUSA show that while University of Otago students placed in work are earning more and working longer, the numbers of students placed into jobs was down 19.2% - 1314 placed into work in the year to April, compared with 1626 in the same period last year.

Student average earnings were up 60% to just over $2000, and worker weeks and enrolments were up 24% and 30% respectively.

OUSA president Logan Edgar is encouraging businesses and members of the public to advertise jobs with SJS.

"The numbers show more students are signing up; we just need more businesses and the public to get on board," Mr Edgar said.

SJS had recently refreshed the layout of its website to make it easier for students and employers to list an advertisement, he said.
