The Letterbox Cat is Aucklander Paula Green's latest collection of poems for children.

Complemented by Myles Lawford's light-hearted drawings, these entries seem to jump off the page.

Many are shape poems which will challenge and inspire very young readers.

Some of these poems have a New Zealand focus, centring upon the tui, the wood pigeon, the Southern Cross or even rugby.

The playful tone is not unlike that of local classics The Nickle Nackle Tree or My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes.

Children will love to dip into this book at leisure, reading perhaps of bookcats or gargle birds, about snowboarding or watching the sky at dusk.

Green's collection teems with onomatopoeia, repetition, simile and nonsense rhyme, and other word play.

Ages 5-10.
