A proposed Dunedin bylaw banning freedom campers in vehicles without toilets has been voted down at the Dunedin City Council.

At a meeting today, councillors voted eight to six against the bylaw, which was an attempt to deal with the flood of freedom campers filling sites at Warrington and Ocean View.

In August, a council bylaw subcommittee voted for the option that would mean those vehicles would have to use campgrounds, backpackers or similar accommodation when staying overnight within the city boundary.

But councillors argued that the bylaw - similar to ones used by other councils across the South Island - would scatter campers far and wide to areas where they could not be controlled.

Well done Council! Why would you have a special work group spend hours, days, month working on this bylaw (and finally consider and listen to all the affected locals) and then vote against what they propose? Do these 8 individuals at Council think they know better than their employees putting in all this work and the locals clearly voicing their concerns? Seems like a (bad) joke to me.

That's ok when theres a real big dirty mess you may have a rethink.

It will come up again for sure. Its a nation wide phenomenon and word is spreading that NZ is a good place for a cheap holiday and party party party! Residents pay to clean up their mess and ACC pays for accidents. Any other country and the travellers pays. We are mugs.
