Some central Dunedin business and building owners are forming a group to combat George St plans.
In June the Dunedin City Council endorsed a multimillion-dollar upgrade concept for the street from Moray Pl to Albany St.
Changes include restricting traffic to one-way travelling south between Frederick St and Moray Pl, installing a cycle lane and creating a paved pedestrian and cycling-priority carriageway between Hanover and St Andrew Sts.
Brent Weatherall Jeweller owner Brent Weatherall says the reduction of cars would be bad for businesses and is creating a group of like-minded retailers in opposition.
Last month he and about 10 others had an initial meeting and were in the process of creating a larger, more formal group.
''We feel we haven't got a voice with this council and we want one. It would be good for council to come to us as retailers.
''To date I feel the council has not kept us in the loop with major changes.''
The group hoped to create a petition opposing the plans.
The council is in the process of creating more detailed plans for the project, for which physical work is not expected to start until 2021.

Totally awesome it is about time the people of Dunedin stood up to the muppets on council and made them accountable, and stopped them from wasting money,
Where do I sign up?, this must be stopped. If I want to park in the front of a shop I now need to park kilometers away and walk, well I just won't go to that shop and I suspect that's something others will do too.
