Over one million requests to view hardcore child pornography have been picked up by an internet filter trialled by the Department of Internal Affairs.
The child porn filter was quietly introduced in 2007, blocking access to more than 7000 sites containing objectionable material.
Over two years, attempts to access child porn sites over two years totalled more than one million, reported 3 News.
The filter is anonymous, and does not reveal information about users.
Internal Affairs says many people would have stumbled across the sites accidentally, through spam and pop-up advertising.
The system was publicly launched two months ago following the trial, with two small providers signing up so far.
