Six logging trucks are working non-stop since noon yesterday to deliver thousands of tonnes of logs from Dunedin to Port Chalmers, in a "one-off event", Port Otago says.
The log carrier Asia Ruby 1 is scheduled to berth at Port Chalmers this morning.
It is too long to use the upper harbour Leith St wharf berth, Port Otago chief executive Geoff Plunket said.
He contacted the ODT, in anticipation people would note the increased traffic on SH88, and apologised in advance for any inconvenience.
The log transfers should be completed by Sunday evening.
"Unfortunately, there’s a quantity of logs needing transferred to Port Chalmers for loading on the Asia Ruby ... it’s a one-off event and we don’t expect a recurrence of this in the foreseeable future."
The six trucks are required to not use engine breaks at Port Chalmers nor drop the vertical, metal log restrainers on to their trailers.
Truck positioning would be done by radio, not truck horns. Night log loading was a common occurrence, Mr Plunket said.
