Otago rowers won a stack of medals at the annual Canterbury championships on Lake Ruataniwha at the weekend.

The 30-medal haul included 12 gold, eight silver and 10 bronze, and included medals won by Otago rowers representing Southern RPC.

Unlike in the past three years, when poor weather wiped out much of the event, the regatta was completed on schedule.

Andrew Potter, of Southern RPC and Otago University Rowing Club, started yesterday's A finals with a bang.

He and Timaru's Cameron Crampton won gold in the men's open coxless pair by almost 3sec, but had to settle for silver in the men's open double sculls later in the day.

However, they combined with Bryce Abernethy (Otago Rowing Club) and Matthew Mesman (Canterbury Rowing Club) to romp to victory by almost 15sec in the men's open coxless quad.

Oamaru Rowing Club's Mark Taylor continues to add medals to his collection.

He won gold in the men's club single sculls in 7min 44.93sec, almost 3sec ahead of Canterbury's Issac Robertson.

Taylor then jumped into his club's under-18 coxed quad with Charlie Wallis, Jared Brenssell, James Scott and coxswain Jessica Mulligan.

After winning Saturday's heat in 6min 50.50sec, they clocked 6min 50.52 in the final, almost 6sec ahead of St Thomas of Canterbury's crew.

North End Rowing Club's crew of Aaron Roydhouse, Ben Sinnamon, Kyle Hughes, Mitchell Booth and coxswain Luke Hurdle won bronze in 7min 2.20sec.

Dunstan Arm Rowing Club had a good weekend, accounting for half of Otago's 12 gold medals.

Its girls under-18 coxed quad crew of Macaela Turfus, Lucy Geddes, Ella Galletly, Sydney Cook and coxswain Sophie Williamson won gold in 7min 39.03sec, which was slower than their third-placed time in their heat (7min 38.16sec)

Turfus, Geddes, Galletly and Cook were later joined by Jas McIntosh, Ella Creagh, Iona Morton, Tarina Crampton and coxswain Sophie Smith.

They won the women's club coxed eight, which was matched by the club's girls under-16 crew of Annalise Cook, Genna Smith, Emily Downey, McIntosh, Iona Morton, Emma Borland, Molly Ellis, Lucy Harrison and coxswain Jake Galletly.

Cook, Smith, Downey, Lucy Harrison and coxswain Galletly also won gold in the girls under-16 coxed quadruple sculls.

The Dunstan club also won gold in the masters coxless quad sculls, while Simon Smith won gold in the masters single sculls.

Hazel Cunliffe and Natasha Bonham-Carter, of Otago University Rowing Club, had a good win in the women's club double sculls.

The pair won in 7min 54.58sec, while Oamaru's Sydney Telfer and Maysie Scott were third in 8min 2.36sec.

Cunliffe and Bonham-Carter also won bronze in the women's open coxless four with Penelope Barnsdale and Hannah Duggan.

The next major regatta is the national championships, on Lake Karapiro next month.
