A clinical first half helped the Bombers beat the Falcons 89-71 in men's A grade basketball at the Edgar Centre on Saturday.

The City Rise Bombers started strongly and posted their best period in the first quarter with 32 points.

The Falcons, who had several new players in the side, struggled to run their plays and made silly ball-handling errors.

Bombers player Steve Robinson dominated from the perimeter and in the paint, scoring his team's first eight points and led the team's scoring with 19 points.

Falcons player Chris Hood led the game scoring with 20 points.

The Falcons had their best quarter in the third, making a late surge back into the game from a 20-point deficit to cut the score down to a 10-point ball game.

However, the Falcons could not carry their momentum into the last quarter, scoring only 10 points in the fourth.

The Bombers finished the game strongly, winning by 18 points.

The Bombers played smart offence and beat the Falcons with passing and fast breaks.

Jan Verberne's ability to read the game beautifully made him a menace around the court.

He made many steals and drove strongly to the basket, picking up 15 points for the game.

Falcons player Fraser Beck had a good game, scoring four three-pointers to end with 14 points, but he said the team lacked fundamentals and missed a few of its usual A grade players.

"Little mistakes that come with experience that ended up letting the Bombers capitalise too easy. They got far too many points in the transitions,'' he said.

In other games, Varsity B trailed the St Kilda Saints by just a point at halftime but the Saints went to work and blew the game out in the second half, winning 105-64.

Magic beat Varsity A 101 - 73.
