Significant snow warning for weekend

A severe weather warning is in place for the Southern Lakes, Central Otago and Clutha regions from Saturday night until late Sunday morning.

MetService said significant amounts of snow were possible at above 200m in these areas.

The Clutha District was not expected to be hit as hard; however, heavy snow was still a possibility in the southern parts of Otago.

Sleet and lesser amounts of snow were expected close to sea level, creating cold and damp conditions.

Drivers were urged to check conditions before leaving home and take these into account.

Snow this morning prompted warnings for motorists, and Haast Pass and the Milford Road were both closed for a time.
