Cycleway planning group makes good progress

A working group planning a new cycleway starting at Lawrence and heading towards Milton, says the plans are looking positive.

Lawrence Cycle Trail Working Group chairman Mark Patterson confirmed with the Otago Daily Times a planned route for the cycleway, designed to connect Lawrence to Milton and Waihola, was revealed at group meetings a few weeks ago.

He said the group was making "pretty solid progress'' towards its goal.

"All the pieces of the puzzle have come together, so we kind of get ahead of ourselves at every point.''

Mr Patterson said the meetings were held to keep stakeholders and landowners informed of any changes.

The cycleway was only in its "feasibility stage'' and there was still "a lot of work to be done''.

However, Mr Patterson said steady progress was being made.

The planned path of the cycleway was not definite but the response at the meetings was "overwhelmingly positive''.

The outcome depended on the response of local landowners and the Department of Conservation.

Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan attended the meetings and said the group had the right attitude by keeping everybody informed.

"They were entering into the spirit ... in the appropriate manner and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of it.''

He said the plans were in draft form only and there was still hard work to be done.

"It's quite an exciting trail and it's only in its early stages.''

Negotiations on aspects of the trail will continue.
