Chilly bin, chair used to stay afloat

Two men who used a chilly bin and a chair to stay afloat after a capsize have prompted Gold Coast police to warn boaties to take a safety equipment check.

Safety equipment needs to include life jackets, flares, and emergency beacons, police say.

The men got into trouble when their 4.5m runabout boat capsized coming in over Jumpinpin Bar near South Stradbroke Island yesterday afternoon.

The 43-year-old and 39-year-old clung to the boat for a couple of hours before it started sinking.

One man grabbed a chilly bin (esky) and the other a chair before they swam to shore.

Neither sustained injuries.
