New spy job up for grabs

A major new spy job is up for grabs.

In a recruitment ad posted this month, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) is looking for a position labelled Director, Intelligence and Assessment.

The DPMC position advertised required "New Zealand citizenship, and the ability to obtain and maintain a national security clearance at the level of Top Secret Special".

The job was for a role described as the "strategic leader of the New Zealand national intelligence and assessments community".

The successful applicant was expected to provide leadership in articulating national security threats to Government decision-makers.

"We require a leader known to have a deep understanding of national and international affairs, with considerable experience of interpreting events and trends of national significance and the ability to influence key decision makers," the public job listing added.

The director will be responsible to Howard Broad, the deputy chief executive of security and intelligence.

New Zealand's spies have received increased funding to boost their capability, SIS director Rebecca Kitteridge told the New Zealand Herald earlier this month.

On November 5, the New Zealand Herald revealed a new report exposed weaknesses in the SIS and recommended operational spies needed better and constant training to avoid breaking the law while protecting New Zealand.
