Public's help needed to find missing man

Police say they're relying on the public to point them in the right direction in the search for missing Westport man Willem Hendrik van Vuuren.

A police spokeswoman said today there had been no new developments in the search.

Mr van Vuuren's known phone records and bank accounts had been checked but there was no sign they had been accessed, she said.

Sometimes what people regarded as insignificant information could in fact be significant and should be reported to the police, the spokeswoman said.

Mr van Vuuren (54) is understood to work at Stockton opencast mine. He was reported missing on Thursday, May 12.

Westport Land Search and Rescue members helped police search Buller for him on May 13 and 14 but found nothing.

An 80-minute helicopter search on May 14 - of the coastline and some old logging tracks inland - also proved fruitless.

Anyone with any information about Mr van Vuuren, or who had seen his vehicle - a silver Mazda Tribute, registration FSC702 - is asked to contact the Tasman District Command Centre on 03 546 3895.
