Deadly night on NZ roads

It has been a deadly night on New Zealand roads, with two fatal crashes occurring before midnight.

A series of smaller crashes have also seen people hospitalised with serious injuries throughout the country, police said.

One person died after a car plummeted off a one-way bridge into water in the Coromandel shortly before 10pm.

Police said emergency services rushed to the scene of the fatal crash on Purangi Rd, Whenuakite, in the Thames-Coromandel district about 9.46pm.

The car was seen to drive off the one-way bridge on Purangi Rd into the water.

It was completely submerged - with the driver still inside, police said.

The vehicle was partially towed from the water with the help of a diver and police are making enquiries into the identity of the driver.

The Serious Crash Unit is at the scene this morning.

It followed another fatal crash, in which an 18-year-old man died, near Tauranga.

Police said it appeared one of the cars had crossed the centreline on State Highway 29A near Maungatapu about 7.30pm when the crash occurred.

The 18-year-old man died at the scene and three other people were taken to Tauranga hospital with moderate injuries.

State Highway 29A Maungatapu was closed until 11.30pm while emergency services and the police serious crash unit were in attendance.

The 18-year-old's family had been advised but his name would not be released until extended family have been informed, police said.

A car drove through a fence and into a house in the Bay of Plenty about 12.45am this morning.

A woman was taken to Whakatane Hospital with serious injuries but the occupants of the Kawerau house were not injured.

Another serious crash saw four people injured in Northland this morning.

Police said the crash was reported just before 6am on State Highway 1 near Horeke, north of Kaikohe.

All four occupants in the vehicle were injured with at least one receiving serious injuries, police said.

The serious crash unit has been called to examine the scene and the road was currently closed.
