New Defence Force chiefs have been announced.

Peter Kelly, currently acting Chief of Army, will permanently take up the role, replacing Major General Dave Gawn.

John Martin will be the new Chief of Navy. He is currently the Assistant Chief Capability for the Defence Force, and will take over from Rear Admiral Jack Steer, who is retiring.

Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee said Cabinet had approved his recommendation of the appointments yesterday.

"The role of a Service Chief in the NZDF is to raise, train and sustain their Service.

"It is a vital position, and underpins what both the Service and the Defence Force do for both government and the public of New Zealand.

"I am sure both officers will carry on providing great service in their new roles, and I wish them well."

Major General Gawn left his position as Chief of Army after being appointed head of mission and chief of staff to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation.
