Quiff, perms and mohawks reigned at Wains Hotel in Dunedin yesterday as 100 hairstylists competed in the regional hairstylist of the year competition.

The regional secretary of the Otago Hairdressers Association, Jenni Prentice, said competition in the junior (under four years' experience) and senior (over four years' experience) categories was particularly strong this year.

"We have 11 salons involved and there are six events which are a mix of live events like cutting and pre-done hairstyles.''

Competition steward Niq James said it was difficult to pinpoint any particular hair trends from the stylists' creations.

"I have seen very progressive work from the next generation of stylists.

"Many of them have done work that is equal to, or better than, the senior stylists' stuff.''

Jasmine Ng, of Oamaru, modelled a half-up do featuring braids, a messy front bun and long hair at the back.

Miss Ng said the style took about three hours and lots of hair ties to create.

Competition categories included day and night styles, best colour and cut.

The winners of the Otago region senior hairstylist and next generation hairstylist of the year categories will have photos of their works judged by three New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers judges alongside 13 other regional winners for a chance to win a trip to New York.

Results. - Otago region next generation hairstylist of the year: Liana King, of Moha Hairdressing, Dunedin.

Otago region senior hairstylist of the year: Jennie Hasler-Jacobs, of Zouave salon, Balclutha.
