Alcohol, cash stolen from unlocked home

Alcohol and a sum of money were stolen after thieves entered an unlocked home in Berwick St, Kaikorai Valley, police say.

Senior Sergeant Liz Waru, of Dunedin, said someone entered the home through an unlocked back door and stole three bottles of alcohol and cash, sometime between Monday and Wednesday.

She wanted to remind people that securing their property and locking doors were essential, Snr Sgt Waru said.

● Three car wheels and tyres were stolen off a Toyota Altezza found on blocks in York Pl yesterday.

Snr Sgt Waru said the car was parked on the street outside a residence and the wheels were stolen between 10pm on Wednesday and 8am yesterday.

Police would like to hear from anyone with information about the incident.

● Police were also looking for the owners of six pounamu necklaces handed into the central station.

Otago Coastal iwi liaison officer Senior Constable Toni Wall, of Dunedin, said she had had the jewellery for a number of years and could not give them to the people that found them as they were "tapu''.

"Some of these are worth a couple of hundred dollars,'' Sgt Wall said.

"If we don't find anyone [that owns them], we'll have to gift them to iwi.''
