The party is over, and the clean-up is in full swing, but the Hyde St hangover will linger for days for three young men.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said three Dunedin men - two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old - were arrested after bags of rubbish piled up on Hyde St were set alight at 5.30am today.

Police took a dim view of the behaviour.

"Obviously we've just got to have common sense. It can lead on to further damage to property and it endangers people's lives, really.

"Keep your lighter in your pocket.''

All three men would appear in the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.

The incident appeared to be the only one of note overnight in Dunedin, as students were otherwise well behaved in town after Saturday's street party, he said.

Eight people were arrested for minor offending during yesterday's party, but police said they were "generally pleased with crowd behaviour".

A St John spokesman confirmed 52 people were treated for a variety of ailments during the day, including 10 that required hospital treatment.

Staff at Dunedin Hospital declined to provide details.
