He may have released an album, taken part in a TV romantic comedy and shot to stardom on social media, but final-year Otago Polytechnic student Paolo "Kimpoy'' Feliciano has flown under the radar in New Zealand.

He was plucked from Dunedin by Universal Music to record an album in the Philippines and has a huge number of social media followers.

However, he dropped that lifestyle to return to Dunedin to complete his polytechnic studies, at his parents' behest.

The tourism and events management student is also about the most laid-back star around, and the way he tells it, has quietly done his thing while the world came knocking on his door.

That seems to be the case with his inclusion in this year's iD Dunedin Fashion Week as a T-shirt model.

"I'm, like, going to be part of the iD Fashion Week as a model ... I don't know why.

"It's weird, but - yeah.''

Kimpoy, as he calls himself, moved to New Zealand with his family in 2009, when his father came to work at Macraes gold mine in Palmerston.

Kimpoy attended East Otago High School.

"I started as a blogger when we first moved here.

"I blogged about things in New Zealand, about school, about my friends, what it's like here, how beautiful the place is.

"Whenever I travelled with my family, like going to Queenstown, I blogged about it on Tumblr.

"Just by doing that I got 100,000 followers on Tumblr.''

Kimpoy started doing videos as well, when he went out or did "random things'' and "that's when my followers started growing''.

As the Philippine Daily Inquirer put it in 2013, most of his followers were "starry-eyed pre-pubescent Filipino girls living thousands of miles away''.

By the time of that article, which described him as a social media sensation, Kimpoy had more than 450,000 followers on Twitter, 100,000 on Tumblr, 96,000 on Facebook and 47,000 on Instagram.

The social media profile had brought him back to the Philippines after he was contacted by Universal, asking if he had a manager.

"It's unexpected - I didn't do it to be famous,'' he said of that query.

He had some stage experience having been in a Dunedin Operatic version of Miss Saigon, and Universal signed him up to record eponymous album Kimpoy Feliciano in 2012.

He spent a year and a-half back in the Philippines recording and touring, as well as appearing in a romantic comedy television series With a Smile.

Today, he has 815,000 followers on Twitter, mostly young women with tweets like "My boy is jealous of Kimpoy Feliciano hahaha'' and "Kimpoy on facebook live but i need to sleep na. Will be having a really good night. Hahaha''.

He is also back to his studies.

"I'm back in Dunedin because my parents want me to finish studying first. That's what I want to do as well.

"When I finish, we'll see what happens.''

Kimpoy has a relaxed attitude towards his future.

"Plans? I don't know, I don't have plans really, I just go with the flow, whatever happens.''
