Placing Lawrence firmly on the tourism map was the focus of a day trip around the town by tourist representatives yesterday.

Clutha District Council development manager Jill Borland hosted about 20 people from Tourism Central Otago and visitor information centre staff from Central Otago, Clutha, and Dunedin.

The group visited accommodation providers and attractions and sampled the town's culinary delights.

Ms Borland said she was approached by Tourism Central Otago about a tour to familiarise members and staff with Lawrence and what it had to offer.

"It's a good opportunity for local businesses to get an understanding of what tourism promoters need to know about their business. It's been an incredibly valuable day, for all of us."

One of the high points for those on the tour was a high tea at the Wild Walnut Cafe, which had a plentiful supply of tea, scones, tiny sandwiches, and cakes.
