A bye in the third round of the Freyberg Masters (over-40) men's interprovincial which gave it a restful morning did not pay off for the Otago Masters team, which went down to Canterbury by a 2 to 3 margin in the fourth round on the Coringa course in Christchurch yesterday.

The team now has one win and two losses and will need to work hard to even the score when it plays Auckland in the fifth round this morning.

At No 1, John McIntee was competitive on the front nine, turning one light, but Canterbury's Aaon Forsythe birdied 12, 13 and 14 on the homeward run.

McIntee had little answer to the barrage of birdies and lost the match on the 15th green.

Queenstown's Simon Boland had his second win at No 2, beating Andrew Dufton with two holes to spare.

He was two up at the turn and was assured of victory after holing long putts for birdies on the 11th and 14th greens.

Andrew Hobbs made it three from three this time at the expense of Canterbury's No 3 Paul Bailie.

He started strongly to lead by four through the seventh hole and unleashed some massive drives on the homeward run to seal the win.

He hit the 565m par 5 fourth hole in two shots, giving Bailie little chance to get back into the game.

Hobbs' form augurs well for the next three weeks as, after this tournament, the St Clair greenkeeper heads to play some of the top courses in the United States.

At No 4, Greg Johnson came up against seasoned sportsman John Rademakers, who represented New Zealand in basketball as a point guard for more than a decade.

Johnson trailed by one at the turn, but Rademakers sank a 6m putt for a birdie at the 11th and chipped in for a birdie on the following hole.

Gary Creedy suffered his first loss at No 5, going down to Jason Sincock in 15 holes.

He trailed by one at the turn, but Sincock birdied 11, 13 and 14 with an impressive putting display to take control.
