Central Otago cycleways are expected to receive ''unprecedented exposure'', potentially millions of viewers, when they appear on Australian television screens this month.

Places We Go, an Australian travel series, will broadcast the first of two episodes featuring the Otago Central Rail Trail and the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold Trails today in Australia.

Tourism Central Otago general manager Anne Pullar said the episodes and associated media platforms would result in ''unprecedented exposure'' for the trails in their largest international market - Australia.

''It is exciting for Central Otago to have a television show of this calibre and with such a strong following in Australia presenting our trails to the Australian audience,'' she said.

Tourism Central Otago market support Alison Mason said Places We Go had a cumulative reach of 5 million viewers per series, and a peak of 328,000 viewers per episode in Australia.

Additionally, repeat screenings and exposure on other media platforms, such as Escape News, a Sunday Australian publication, could contribute to more than 5 million more views.

Presenters and crew of the show were hosted by Tourism Central Otago in late February. Ms Pullar said the shows told the story of the presenters, the people they met and the places they visited.

The Otago Central Rail Trail episode airs tonight on Australia's Channel 10, and the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold Trails episode on April 19. The shows could be watched from New Zealand on the programme's website
